About the museum

The Museo de Galera opened to the public on 23 July 2001. It was installed in the former chapel of the convent of the Monjas de Cristo Rey, a building owned by the Diocese of Guadix-Baza, which the diocese ceded for this use. The project added a steel mezzanine, not supported by the chapel walls, which adds about 80 m² of exhibition space. The ethnography section opened in August 2004, and the remains of the Mummy of Galera have been on display since July 2005.

The museum occupies about 100 m² of floor space spread over three levels and offers a route of about 4,000 years, from the Copper Age to recent history. The first floor covers the evolution of the landscape and the Argaric culture of the Copper and Bronze Ages, with tools, pottery, weapons, funerary practices and the partially mummified remains of burial 121 from Castellón Alto.

The ground floor covers archaeological research, the Late Bronze Age, Iberian culture, Roman daily life, the medieval period and numismatics, with a replica of the Goddess of Galera and Roman inscriptions. In the basement, a former wine cellar, local life in recent history is shown (wine, esparto and hemp, dwellings), as well as the “Rincón de la Memoria” (Corner of Memory), a dining room in a cave house from the 1950s.
