About the museum
Until the creation of the Junta Central de Fiestas (Central Festivals Board) in 1970, Villena's festivities were organised by two bodies: the Junta de la Virgen, for the religious part, and the Town Council, for the civil part. In 1977 the Junta Central bought the Selva family's townhouse-palace on the Plaza de Santiago and made it its headquarters. The museum opened there in 1980 and occupies the entire first floor of the building.
The collection offers a broad sample of the Moors and Christians festivities of Villena and focuses on their historical aspect. The 19th-century objects are the oldest and most valuable, and these are joined by 20th-century pieces donated by their former owners. The most striking part is the festive costumes: those of all the parade groups are preserved, including several from the 19th century and costumes of groups that no longer exist.
Festival images, posters and programmes published over the years are also on display, along with a section devoted to the original scores of festive music. The building, of four floors, is an example of 19th-century bourgeois architecture, with Nolla ceramic floors.
