About the museum

The museum occupies the ground floor of the house and studio of Villena sculptor Antonio Navarro Santafé (1906–1983), who designed the space himself. It is a traditional 19th-century house that the artist remodelled into a studio and exhibition room, with three arches in different styles that he built himself to divide the rooms. After his death, his widow donated the property to the Villena town council.

The museum first opened in 1983, and in 2000 the Generalitat Valenciana recognised it as a Permanent Museum Collection. The exhibition brings together smaller and medium-sized works, sculptures, documents, sketches and photographs, some of them brought from his studio in Madrid.

Navarro Santafé worked in wood and marble, producing religious imagery and portraits, and he is regarded as one of Spain's finest animal sculptors. Among his best-known works are the Monumento al Oso y el Madroño in Madrid's Puerta del Sol, the Monumento al Caballo in Jerez de la Frontera, the monument to Ruperto Chapí in Villena, and the present image of the Virgen de las Virtudes, patron saint of the town, carved after the original was lost during the Civil War. In the museum you can see sketches, both on paper and in sculpture, of several of these monuments.
