Museo del Fuego y de los Bomberos

Municipal museum on the work and history of Zaragoza's firefighters, in the former Convento de la Victoria, with immersive rooms and historic vehicles.

Opening hoursAdmission €3 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The museum is housed in the former Convento de la Victoria, founded in 1576 by the Order of Minims of Saint Francis of Paola. After the disentailment of 1836 the building became a military barracks and, between 1863 and 1876, it was decided to move the municipal depot and the fire station there. The tower and part of the convent were demolished in 1877, and the extension works for the fire station were completed in 1896.

The City Council of Zaragoza restored the building with support from the Ministry of Housing and kept the dome, the brick vaulted basements, the timber floors and the cloister courtyard, which is now covered. Fire station no. 2 still occupies the former church. The museum arose from public interest in earlier exhibitions on the subject.

The route explains the evolution of firefighting, from the water-carriers' guilds of the 16th century to the professional Fire Company of 1931, with rooms devoted to caps and helmets, rescue, pumps and the vehicles in the courtyard, two immersive rooms on a forest fire and a domestic fire, and the Collector's Attic with pieces donated by private individuals.

Highlights

  • Two immersive rooms: a forest fire and a house fire, in real time
  • Historic firefighting vehicles in the cloister courtyard
  • Pumps and extinguishing equipment from different periods
  • The Collector's Attic, with collections donated by private individuals
  • Restored building of the former Convento de la Victoria
