About the museum
The Casa de los Pardo was built in 1535 for Jerónimo Cósida and Violante de Albión, following the model of the Aragonese Renaissance palace with a central courtyard. In 1979, shortly after the death of José Camón Aznar (1898–1979), the Museo e Instituto de Humanidades Camón Aznar opened here, with the collection that this art historian, a great specialist on Goya, had assembled together with his wife, María Luisa Álvarez Pinillos. The restoration of the building, by Regino Borobio, received a Europa Nostra award.
After a major renovation begun in 2008, the museum reopened in 2015 as Museo Goya. Colección Ibercaja – Museo Camón Aznar, with a permanent collection reorganised around the artist. It includes Spanish painting from the 17th to the 19th centuries, decorative arts, furniture, graphic works and a specialised library, as well as Goya's print series.
In 2026 the museum was transformed once more, to a project by the studio Sebastián Arquitectos: an extension to around 4,600 m², a new public entrance from Calle Santiago towards the Plaza del Pilar, new rooms, immersive experiences and a viewing terrace with views of the basilica. It reopened to the public on 9 October 2026.
