About the museum
In 1982, while regularising Calle San Juan and San Pedro, part of a Roman colonnade came to light, and the excavations were extended to the adjoining plot, where the great pool of a public bath complex of Caesaraugusta was located. In 1986 the City Council of Zaragoza took on the in situ conservation of part of the remains, and in 1990 test pits for the foundations of a new building uncovered public latrines from an earlier phase.
The museum opened on 25 May 1999 in the basement where the remains were preserved, and it is the second site museum in the city devoted to the Roman period, after the Museo del Foro. It is part of the Ruta de Caesaraugusta, together with the Forum, River Port and Theatre museums.
Part of a floor from the time of Augustus survives, along with the latrines, dating from the middle of Tiberius's reign and with room for about 29 people, and the natatio or colonnaded pool, built at the end of the 1st century AD, of which 9.7 of its estimated 15.8 metres can be seen. Panels, a model, reproductions of toilet articles, a panoramic audiovisual and a virtual reconstruction complete the visit.
