About the museum
The museum was founded in 1980 as a personal project of Piedad Isla, a self-taught photographer and ethnologist who travelled through the north of the province of Palencia in the 1950s and 1960s to document ways of life that have since disappeared. She set up the museum in the house she shared with her husband, Juan Torres, a building on the Plaza de la Cruz built on the orders of Gutiérrez de Mier.
The regional Department of Culture (Consejería de Cultura) recognised the museum in 1998, and in 2007 it joined the Sistema de Museos, now the Red Museística de Castilla y León (Castilla y León Museum Network). In 2000 the Fundación Cultural y Asistencial Piedad Isla y Juan Torres was established; it runs the museum and is digitising the photographic archive of the author, which is part of the holdings of the Centro de Documentación de la Montaña Palentina (Documentation Centre of the Palencia Mountains).
The collection brings together around 2,000 objects showing how the people of the region lived: tools of trades such as carpenter, farmer, miner, blacksmith, stonemason, shepherd, shoemaker or basket-maker; kitchen utensils and tools for farming and livestock work; pieces of the wool and linen textile industry; toys, clothing and musical instruments. A permanent exhibition presents more than 300 photographs by Piedad Isla herself.
