About the museum

The ROM Exhibition Centre, “Románico y Territorio” (“Romanesque and Territory”), opened on 5 July 2006 in the monastery of Santa María la Real in Aguilar de Campoo, after two years of works. It is promoted by the Fundación Santa María la Real del Patrimonio Histórico and occupies the sacristy and the church of the monastery, which has more than eight hundred years of history.

Its aim is to show Romanesque art as an inseparable whole of monumental, natural and human heritage: roads, villages, churches, traditions, landscapes, food and people. It also seeks to show how life was lived at the time and what has survived from that society to the present day. Its aims are emotion, entertainment and education.

The regional museum directory describes a collection of scale models of Romanesque buildings from the surroundings and from the Montaña Palentina, alongside pieces from the medieval monastery. The visit includes, besides the museum, the church, the chapter house, the refectory, the lower and upper cloisters and the Salona. Several routes can be chosen, such as the historical-artistic visit, “La cara oculta del monasterio” (“The Hidden Side of the Monastery”), a children’s visit and the Bosque Románico (Romanesque Forest), with information points offering audio, text and photographs in the centre’s app.
