About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico “Usatxi” is in the Plaza de Pipaón, a village in the Montaña Alavesa that belongs to the municipality of Lagrán. It displays objects, utensils and arrangements that show how the villagers lived at the beginning of the 20th century. Everything it contains was donated by the people of the village.
The exhibition includes farming implements and tools from various trades. The house is recreated with a low-fire kitchen (cocina de fuego bajo), bedrooms with period furniture, bread-making utensils, the larder with provisions from the pig slaughter (matanza), the machinery for making chorizo and other sausages, and the wine skin (pellejo de vino), with figures dressed in the village's traditional costumes. Costumes for traditional dances, dishes used for extreme unction, books and church ornaments, the Arca de la Misericordia (Ark of Mercy) of 1555, and school materials such as the slate board, map, encyclopaedia, measuring vessels and globe are also on display.
The ethnographic day is held on the last Saturday of August, when villagers and the Usatxi Cultural Association represent the life and customs of the early 20th century in period costumes, with traditional tasks such as reaping, threshing, laundry at the wash-house (lavadero), charcoal burning, and making bread and sausages.
