About the museum

The Museo Vivanco de la Cultura del Vino opened in 2004 in Briones, next to the family winery, and was presented by King Juan Carlos I. It grew out of the commitment of the Vivanco family, who for more than half a century have gathered objects and artworks related to wine, a collection begun by Pedro Vivanco Paracuellos. It is now driven by the Fundación Vivanco, chaired by Santiago Vivanco.

The centre covers more than 4,000 m² and holds archaeological, ethnographic and artistic pieces that trace some 8,000 years of the history of wine: ancient vessels, presses, tools for the field and the cellar, and works by artists such as Picasso, Sorolla, Juan Gris, Warhol, Chillida, Barceló or Genovés. The permanent route is organised into thematic rooms on the origin of wine, the soils and the history of Rioja, and is complemented by audiovisual resources, a room for temporary exhibitions and the Jardín de Baco, an outdoor space with more than 220 grape varieties.

The Organización Mundial del Turismo recognised the foundation’s wine culture programme in 2007. The museum is part of Experiencias Vivanco, which also includes visits to the winery, tastings, a restaurant and events.
