Palacio de los Olvidados

16th-century palatial house in the Albaicín with an exhibition on the Inquisition, a viewpoint over the Alhambra and a flamenco venue.

Opening hoursAdmission €7

About the museum

The Palacio de los Olvidados occupies a former 16th-century palatial house on the Cuesta de Santa Inés, in the lower Albaicín, on the banks of the Darro river and at the foot of the Alhambra. The district was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984 and retains the character of a blend of Arab, Sephardic and Christian cultures.

The building's most striking feature is its two-tier Mannerist doorway, with a wrought-iron balcony and a broken curved pediment housing a coat of arms; this heraldry suggests that the house belonged to a converso (a Jew who had converted to Christianity) subjected to a purity-of-blood (limpieza de sangre) inquiry. On the opposite corner rises a tower with an open gallery. Beyond the entrance hall lies a square courtyard with white marble Corinthian columns and acanthus-leaf corbels, which is also used for presentations, lectures and other events.

Today the palace operates as a museum over four floors, from the ground floor up to the attic with the viewpoint. Its permanent exhibition brings together a display of instruments of torture and capital punishment, drawn from those used by the Inquisition and civil courts across Europe. The building also hosts the exhibition “Lorca Infinito” and a flamenco venue (tablao), the Palacio Flamenco.
