About the museum
The Casa de los Pisa was built by the Pisa family shortly after the Catholic Monarchs took Granada in 1492. Its members held important posts in the city and are remembered for taking in Juan de Dios, who died there on 8 March 1550.
After the family died out in the mid-19th century, the Hospitaller Order of San Juan de Dios bought the building in 1927, regarding it as one of the most cherished places in its heritage. In January 1931 the Archivo-Museo San Juan de Dios (San Juan de Dios Archive-Museum) was created there, a cultural centre of the Order run by the Provincia Bética. Its purpose is to preserve and make known the cultural heritage of the Order for pastoral, scientific and educational purposes.
The house is a good example of Granadan Renaissance architecture, with elements in transition between Gothic and Mudéjar. The museum occupies twelve rooms, three galleries, a courtyard and a chapel, and brings together paintings, goldsmith's work, furniture, porcelain and all the iconography of the saint. The archive holds documentation on the management of the Order's hospitals. A residence for older people operates alongside the museum.
