About the museum
Since 2001 the museum has been housed in the former Palacio Abacial of the monastery of Santa María la Real, an 18th-century building that served as the abbot's residence, separate from the rest of the religious community but within the monastic precinct. On the ground floor the monastery's pharmacy was set up in 1785.
It is run by a foundation in which the Ayuntamiento de Nájera, the Asociación de Amigos de la Historia Najerillense and the Instituto de Estudios Riojanos take part. Its mission is to preserve and disseminate the historical heritage of Nájera, its region and La Rioja, and it is also responsible for the archaeological excavations at the Alcázar de Nájera.
The permanent exhibition, covering about 420 m², is spread across three rooms and a central corridor and presents a selection of archaeological material from the Najerilla valley, from prehistory to the early modern period: Palaeolithic industry from Badarán, moulds and Hispanic terra sigillata from Tricio, medieval Hispano-Muslim, Jewish and Christian ceramics, remains of the Alcázar, and objects of the traditional life of the region. Most of the ethnography, art and documentation holdings are kept in storage due to lack of exhibition space.
