About the museum
The Museo Regional de Arte Moderno, known as MURAM, opened on 29 April 2009 in Cartagena. It occupies a building rehabilitated by the architect Martín Lejárraga, which is joined to the Palacio de Aguirre, an eclectic-modernist building designed in 1901 by Víctor Beltrí for the industrialist Camilo Aguirre. The restored palace is visited with the same museum ticket.
The permanent collection brings together painting, sculpture, photography, video and works on paper. Its origins lie in the holdings of the former Diputación Provincial de Murcia (Provincial Council of Murcia), and in later acquisitions made by the Autonomous Community. The route offers an overview of Spanish art of the 19th and 20th centuries and of the early 21st century, with works by artists such as Dalí, Pedro Flores, Ramón Gaya and Chillida.
The museum also runs temporary exhibitions and educational activities. Admission is free.
