About the museum
The Museo The Ocean Race, formerly called the Museo Volvo Ocean Race, presents itself as the only museum in the world devoted to the most demanding ocean sailing race. Alicante has been the departure port of the competition since 2008 and will be again in the 2026–27 edition.
The space covers more than fifty years of the race's history and of the evolution of nautical technology. It does so with audiovisual installations, games, models and other resources that show the human effort the race demands. The museum also presents the organisation's work to raise awareness about the health of the oceans and to hold the event in the most sustainable way possible.
Outside the building two historic yachts can be seen: the “Piratas del Caribe”, withdrawn from the first leg of the 2005–06 edition with a broken bulkhead and a hull leak, and on display in the Plaza Puerta del Mar since December 2015; and the “Brasil 1”, a Volvo Open 70 from the same edition, whose interior can be visited to learn about the living conditions of the crew.
