About the museum
The Museu de Fogueres is dedicated to Les Fogueres de Sant Joan, Alicante's great festival, and is on the Rambla de Méndez Núñez, in the area of the Casa de la Festa. Its route explains how the Hogueras began in 1928 and how they have evolved into one of the city's signs of popular identity.
The collection brings together documents, festival costumes, photographs and models of monuments. Among the most notable pieces are the ninots indultats: figures that each year are saved from the flames by popular vote for their artistic merit, and which successive Hogueras have handed over to the museum.
The historical account dwells on the Republican period, when the festival grew to 35 comisiones (festival committees) in 1934, and on the contribution of artists such as Gastón Castelló and Lorenzo Aguirre, who gave the monuments a distinctive style. The festival was recognised as of International Tourist Interest in 1983 and as a Bien de Interés Cultural Inmaterial (intangible cultural asset of cultural interest) in 2013. The museum is a municipal facility and holds the SICTED quality mark.
