Art museum by the sea in Sitges, with collections from the Romanesque to Realism, noucentisme and the paintings by Sert on the Great War.

Opening hoursAdmission €12

About the museum

The Museu Maricel occupies the Maricel de Mar building, part of the complex that Charles Deering promoted in Sitges at the beginning of the 20th century and that is linked by a bridge over the calle de Fonollar to the Palau de Maricel. The Diputació de Barcelona bought the building in 1969 and the museum opened shortly afterwards, around 1970. After a renovation, it reopened in December 2014.

The core of the collection comes from the gynaecologist and collector Jesús Pérez-Rosales (Manila 1896 – Barcelona 1989), who gathered more than 3,000 pieces. Since 1995 the museum has also held the Colección de Arte de la Villa de Sitges, of about 50 works, and the maritime holdings of Emerencià Roig i Raventós. Since 2012, works by Ramon Casas, Miquel Utrillo, Arcadi Mas i Fondevila and other artists have been added.

The route goes from medieval art up to the 20th century. On the second floor there are Romanesque and Gothic sculptures and altarpieces, as well as Renaissance and Baroque ceramics and furniture; on the first floor, neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, the Luminist School, Modernism and noucentisme, with a room of paintings from the Cau Ferrat tavern. The ground floor includes the former Gothic chapel of the Hospital de Sant Joan, a terrace with sea views and three noucentista sculptures by Joan Rebull, and the Sala Sert, with large paintings from 1915–1916 on the Great War.
