About the museum

The Museu d'Art de Cerdanyola opened on 10 September 2009 in Can Domènech. The building was designed by Gaietà Buïgas in 1894 as the first Teatre-Casino for summer visitors; his nephew Eduard M. Balcells later converted it into a summer house (1905-1912), and from 1961 to 1999 it housed the Domènech pharmaceutical laboratories, until it passed to the town council.

The core of the museum is the Modernist stained-glass windows of the Dames de Cerdanyola, recovered and returned to their original location, one of the great examples of Catalan Modernist stained glass. The collection, focused on 19th- and 20th-century Catalan art, includes works by artists linked to the town, such as Ismael Smith, Josep Llimona, Josep de Togores, Eduard Maria Balcells and Francesc Juventeny; in its first fifteen years it has grown from 200 to around 3,500 pieces.

The permanent exhibition “Del modernisme a l'art déco” is arranged in rooms devoted to the architects Buïgas and Balcells, to Ismael Smith, to Modernism (with the Torre López salon and the stained glass), to Josep de Togores and to the Noucentista artistic colony that lived in Cerdanyola between the 1920s and the Civil War. The museum, which forms part of the network of museums of the Diputació de Barcelona and of the Catalan art museum network, also has a 120-seat auditorium and a contemporary art programme.
