About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Montcada was founded in 1982 and has been housed in the former Casa de la Vila since 1987. Its origins lie in archaeology: it was created to preserve the finds from the Iberian settlement of Les Maleses, in the Sierra de Marina, which remains one of its main areas of work, with regular excavation campaigns since 2000.
Today the museum works to protect and promote local cultural heritage: the site of Les Maleses, the Rec Comtal, the Mina, the Casa de les Aigües, medieval farmsteads (masías), Modernist towers, hermitages and churches. In addition to its permanent exhibition, it runs a programme of heritage trails and visits, an educational service with history and science workshops, temporary exhibitions and a library specialising in archaeology, prehistory, ancient history and local anthropology.
Following a renovation of the museum displays, the exhibition incorporates tactile modules from the La Mirada Tàctil project, such as a model with a partial reconstruction of the Iberian settlement of Les Maleses, Braille labels and a video about the paper mill. The museum publishes the annual magazine Monte Catano.
