About the museum

The Molí d'en Rata is a former hydraulic flour mill, restored in 2005, which forms part of the Centre d'Interpretació del Patrimoni Molí d'en Rata, the municipal heritage facility of Ripollet. According to the tourist guide to the Vallès Occidental, the complex includes the mill and an interpretation building with two exhibition rooms, one permanent and one temporary.

On 19 July 1825 Bartomeu Clos i Braut received permission to build a flour mill on his land, but he needed water from the Monnar irrigation channel, and the owners of the channel refused because he had not contributed to the cost of a mine to search for water. In 1859, after years of lawsuits, his son Josep Clos was able to join the water company and start up the mill. Other owners and tenants followed, among them Joaquim Pujol, Josep Bodaló, Martí Gasol and his son Jaume Gasol. The name comes from a miller with many children, whom he called “les ratetes”, which is how he came to be nicknamed “Rata”.

The mill used the water of the Ripoll river: a weir diverted the flow through a channel to a reservoir that maintained the pressure and served as a reserve in times of drought. The water turned a turbine that drove the shaft and the millstone. The grain was loaded into a hopper and reached the eye of the millstone, and the flour was collected in a box. Around the early 1950s the mill stopped grinding and closed. Today visitors can learn its history, see it in operation and make bread on open days or on guided visits arranged in advance.
