About the museum
The Museu d'Art Modern de la Diputació de Tarragona (MAMT) was founded in 1976 by the Diputación to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art, to preserve its artistic heritage and to share it with the community. In 2026 it celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.
The building, known as the Casa Martí, results from the union of three former houses in the Upper Town. The first belonged to the Jesuit College and was bought in 1772 by Antoni Martí i Gatell, whose son, the scientist Antoni Martí i Franquès, lived there from 1798 until his death in 1832. In the 19th century the Martí family extended and restored the large house. Between 1951 and 1976 it was the seat of the Diputación's School of Art; afterwards the first activities of a new museum began to be organised there.
The Diputación bought the building on the carrer de Santa Anna in 1983; the architect Jaume Mutlló i Pàmies designed its adaptation and the museum reopened its doors in 1991. In 2008 the permanent collection exhibition was renewed with a strongly didactic character and, since 2020, under the new direction, the rooms formerly devoted to the permanent exhibition host temporary exhibitions that respond to current artistic languages. The MAMT also has the MAMT Pedagògic educational service, a documentary collection, a library, a photographic archive and a shop.
