About the museum
The Museu Diocesà de Tarragona is a century-old institution linked to the cathedral. It houses a first-rate collection of art and archaeology, notable for its group of Gothic paintings from various parts of the archdiocese, and is spread across several spaces of the cathedral, next to the cloister.
The cathedral stands on the highest part of the city, on the site where the temple of Augustus of the Roman Tarraco once stood. Its cloister is the largest Romanesque cloister in Catalonia, and it is reached through a great Romanesque portal. The museum occupies several rooms around the cloister and in the canons' quarters, where the most representative pieces of the prehistoric period are displayed.
The visit also includes the archaeological route, which allows visitors to see the perimeter wall of the imperial enclosure of Tárraco. Admission to the museum is not sold separately: entry is with the ticket for the cathedral visit, which gives access to the nave, the cloister, the rooms of the Diocesan Museum and the archaeological route.
