About the museum
The Museu-Arxiu Pere Virgili came out of the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Pere Virgili, which took place throughout 1999. Once the events were over, the organising committee proposed to the Vilallonga del Camp Town Council that it create a museum dedicated to the town's illustrious son. In 2000 the council bought a house on Carrer del Doctor Pere Virgili for this purpose, known as Cal Roso.
Pere Virgili (Vilallonga del Camp, 1699 – Barcelona, 1776) was an essential figure in the transformation of surgery in Spain in the 18th century. He founded and directed the first two surgical colleges in the country, in Cadiz and in Barcelona, and Ferdinand VI appointed him court surgeon.
The museum sets out to reflect the 18th century. The ground floor shows the trades and utensils of Virgili's childhood and youth in his native village, among them the water miner (minador de aigua), the espardenyer (rope-soled shoemaker), the shoemaker and the cooper, along with the beginnings of the spirits (aguardiente) and textile industries, with three models. On the first floor, a permanent exhibition follows Virgili's professional career with surgical instruments, documents, books, a re-creation of the sickbay of an 18th-century ship and a model of the Royal College of Surgery of Cadiz. The second floor is devoted to temporary exhibitions and other cultural events. The museum is run by the Associació Centre d'Estudis Pere Virgili.
