About the museum

The Museu de l'Anxova i de la Sal, also called MASLE, is dedicated to the history of fishing and the salting of oily fish in L'Escala, from the 16th century to the present day. It occupies a Modernista building of 1913, built as a new slaughterhouse on the outskirts of the village to replace the earlier one on the Platja del Cargol. The building kept its function until the mid-20th century and was then left unused.

In 2001 the project to convert it into a centre for managing and disseminating cultural heritage was approved, and the museum opened in 2006. Its mission is to recover, conserve and make known the tangible and intangible heritage of L'Escala, among other ways through the project “El Hilo de la Memoria” (The Thread of Memory), which gathers the oral history of the municipality.

The permanent exhibition explains how fishing methods evolved, from sardinal nets to sonar and radar, and shows models of the old port and salting factories, fishing gear, sailors' vocabulary and canning machinery. The museum also holds valuable photographic collections and each year organises the Festa de la Sal (Salt Festival) on the third Saturday of September.
