About the museum
The Museu de la Mediterrània descends from the former Museu del Montgrí i del Baix Ter, created in the early 1980s and first housed in the Casa Pastors. In 2003 it moved to Can Quintana, in order to renew the exhibition space and give it a new approach that links local heritage with Mediterranean culture. The new museum opened on 1 May 2003.
Can Quintana is a manor house from the late 15th or early 16th century, located within the town walls. It passed to the Quintana family, wealthy oil and wine merchants, and in 1907 and 1908 Rafael Masó decorated its interiors in the Noucentisme style. In the back garden grow eight centenarian palm trees, a reminder of the indiano tradition linked to the fortune the family made in Cuba. The ground floor houses the reception, the temporary exhibition rooms, classrooms and the auditorium; the permanent exhibition occupies the first floor, and the documentation centre is in the attic.
The permanent exhibition, entitled “Mediterrània. Natura, Cultura i Diversitat”, explores the landscape of the Montgrí, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter through sound and music. The museum also has a documentation centre on the Montgrí, the Medes and the Baix Ter, and an educational offer for all levels.
