About the museum

The Museu de la Tècnica de l'Empordà was founded to preserve and explain the moment when science and technology transformed everyday life. The collection stems from the passion for mechanical pieces of the Padrosa family, which has four generations and more than a hundred years of business history. In 2004 the Fundació Padrosa-Pierre and the museum were created, with a clear commitment to giving back to society through exhibitions, educational programmes, lectures and audiovisual initiatives.

The museum occupies a building that the Padrosa family bought in 1944, housing their home on the first floor and the company's headquarters, with offices and a workshop, on the ground floor. When the company moved to other parts of the city, from 1994 onwards, the building was adapted to house the foundation and the museum. The original façade and staircase of the old building are preserved.

The exhibition presents inventions of the Industrial Revolution, above all from the 19th century, such as the automobile, the four-stroke engine, the phonograph, the telephone and the first cameras. On the ground floor are displayed, among other objects, an early 20th-century Hispano-Suiza, Vespa scooters, bicycles, telephones, Michelin guides, workshop tools and cash registers. The upper floors contain stoves, sewing machines, clocks, typewriters and calculators.

In 2010 Figueres City Council recognised the foundation's work with the Fulla de Figuera de Plata (Silver Fig Leaf) award for its promotion and dissemination of culture.
