About the museum
The Museu de la Garrotxa, founded in 1982, is on the third floor of the former Hospici in Olot and occupies nearly a thousand square metres. It manages the heritage of the city and the region and forms part of the Museus d'Olot together with the Museu dels Sants and the Casa Museu Can Trincheria, which are less than three minutes' walk away.
Its route centres on the creation of the Olot Drawing School in 1783 and the city's later history. It begins with textiles and indianas (printed cotton fabrics) and with the origins of the museum and the school, and continues with the Olot School, the landscape movement led by Joaquim and Marian Vayreda and Josep Berga i Boix. Modernisme is represented by Miquel Blay, one of the period's most prominent sculptors, by the poster collection of Cigarrillos París and by “La Càrrega” by Ramon Casas, a key work of Catalan art. Josep Clarà and Francesc Vayreda are at the centre of the section on Noucentisme, and the last section covers the Second Republic, the Escola Superior del Paisatge and the post-war period, with artists such as Melcior Domenge, Enric Galwey, Iu Pasqual and Leonci Quera.
In 2016 the museum received thirteen works on deposit from the collection of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. It closed temporarily in January 2017, and on 1 April of that year it opened a new permanent exhibition, with a museography and contents reworked from the artistic history of the city and its art school.
