About the museum
The creation of the Museu Municipal de Vilassar de Mar was approved by the town council plenary in 1955, with antecedents in the work of Lluís Guardiola and in local excavations and finds. After several temporary seats, in 1992 the Museu de la Marina opened in the Sènia del Rellotge, a Modernista building of 1902 designed by Eduard Ferrés i Puig, because the maritime collections were the most suitable to be shown to the public.
In 2009 the museum was integrated, together with the Museu Enric Monjo, into the Museu Municipal de Vilassar de Mar, and it also received the municipal art collections and the Roman necropolis. The local maritime collection, specialised in history and ethnography, explains the origins and much of the history of the municipality: fishing gear, nautical instruments, maritime signal codes and transatlantic navigation, as well as an exhibition on the Roman necropolis of Vilassar, from the excavation of about sixty tombs found in 1999. The llagut Sant Ramon, a traditional boat, is an extension of the museum at sea.
The museum is currently temporarily closed for fitting-out and internal works.
