About the museum

The sculpture collection that Enric Monjo (1895–1976), a distinguished son of Vilassar de Mar, donated to his town gave rise in 1971 to the Gliptoteca Enric Monjo, later renamed Museu Enric Monjo (1986). It was managed by the Barcelona Provincial Council and then by a board with municipal representation, until in 2005 the Provincial Council transferred all its rights to Vilassar de Mar town council. The museum occupies a former 17th-century inn (mesón) that served as the town hall from 1785 to 1962.

In 2009 the Museu Municipal de Vilassar de Mar was created, bringing together this museum, the Museu de la Marina and the municipal art collections. The Casa Museu Carme Rovira (2014) and the Espacio Cultural Can Bisa (2011–2025) were later added.

Since 14 April 2019 the ground floor, devoted to temporary exhibitions of visual arts and above all sculpture, and the first floor, with the permanent exhibition “Enric Monjo, escultor”, have been open on a permanent basis. The exhibition is a tour of his training, his Noucentista phase and his production as a professional sculptor, supported by an audiovisual. The second floor, with the artist's studio, the storeroom and the work areas, can be visited on free guided visits by appointment.
