About the museum
The museum has its origins in the Cau de la Costa Brava association, founded in Palamós in 1920 with the idea of setting up a museum of varied collections. In 1989, with these holdings at risk of being lost, the town council collected, inventoried and catalogued them; in 1990 work began on adapting the Casa Montaner, and in 1992 a multipurpose room was opened. In 1994 the council signed an agreement with the Universitat de Girona and the project was redefined as a thematic museum on fishing on the Costa Brava.
In 1999 Ports de la Generalitat ceded the Tinglado, a former port warehouse from the 1930s in the fishing port, and the museum opened in 2002. The museography is by Varis Arquitectes (Dani Freixes, Eulàlia González and Artur Arias), who received the Premio Nacional de Diseño of 2001 for it. The exhibition space occupies around 1,200 m².
The permanent exhibition is organised in five areas: what is fished, where and from where, who is who in the world of fishing, how fishing was and is carried out, and the future of the sector. The museum is completed by the Barques del Peix (the Gacela, a former trawler, and the Estrella Polar, a purse seiner), the Documare documentation centre and the Espai del Peix, with a gastronomy classroom.
