About the museum
The Museu de Llimiana occupies the Casa Bonifaci, a three-storey building on the Plaça Major, opposite the Romanesque church. The Bonifaci family lived there from the mid-19th century, and five doctors came from the family, starting in the early years of that century. The residential floor has been preserved and adapted as a museum, with the elements kept from its former owners.
The visit offers two perspectives on the past: the history of Llimiana and of the Bonifaci family on the one hand, and the biography of Josep Bonifaci Mora (Llimiana, 1895 – Barcelona, 1989) on the other. A graduate in Medicine from the University of Barcelona, during the Civil War he held posts in the PSUC and the UGT and was Director General of Social Assistance in the Republican government. He accompanied José Díaz as his personal doctor to Paris and Moscow, and lived in long exile in several European countries (Moscow, Toulouse, Prague, Bucharest and Paris). He returned to Barcelona in 1970 and spent his last years between Barcelona and Llimiana, where his remains are laid to rest.
Family documents, the preservation of the rooms and the municipal acquisition of the building have made it possible to incorporate Bonifaci's legacy, his defence of democracy, freedom and medical professionalism, into Catalonia's memorial heritage. The museum is part of the Xarxa d'Espais de Memòria.
