About the museum

The museum began its activity in 1990 as the municipal museum of Isona. In 1994 it closed for a thorough refurbishment, and in April 1995 it reopened, no longer just as a local museum but as the hub of the Parc Cretaci de la Conca Dellà project, a local development initiative based on the cultural and natural heritage of the territory.

The museum occupies an old house in the centre of Isona, one of those saved from the bombings of 1938. Its route is spread across floors: the ground floor, the entrance floor, presents the geographical setting and the cultural and natural wealth of the region; the first floor is devoted to Cretaceous fossils and to the dinosaurs that lived in the area more than 65 million years ago; and the second floor explains the evolution of the Roman city of Aeso, which about 2,000 years ago was an important settlement in the interior of Catalonia.

The museum researches, conserves and disseminates the archaeological and palaeontological heritage of a territory that extends from the Montsec to the Pyrenees. It is also the starting point for exploring the other spaces of the Parc Cretaci and the heritage of the region: the palaeontological sites of La Posa and Orcau, the Roman villa of Llorís, the wall of Aeso, the castle of Llordà and the church of Santa Maria de Covet.
