About the museum
The Museu Diocesà de Menorca is housed in the former Sant Agustí convent, known as el Socors, in the historic centre of Ciutadella. The Augustinians received a licence in 1612 to build a convent within the city walls, the first stone of the church was laid in 1619, and the present complex was built in the 17th century, with additions in the 18th century, such as the church's twin towers. The friars lived there until the disentailment (desamortización) of 1835.
After several uses, the building passed to the bishopric and opened as a diocesan seminary in 1858. For many years it was the only secondary and higher education centre in Ciutadella, and the bishops enriched it with an archaeological collection and with cabinets of natural sciences and physics. Today it houses the museum, which brings together those collections and others.
The museum holds island-related pieces, such as archaeological material, paintings and prints from the 18th and 19th centuries, works by the Menorcan painter Pere Daura (1896–1976) and holdings from the Natural Sciences and Physics Cabinet of the Diocesan Seminary. One wing of the convent remains reserved for the religious community and the rest is open to the public; the cloister and church are used as auditoriums, especially during summer festivals. Guided tours are offered of the most outstanding spaces of the building, such as the cloister.
