About the museum

The Museu Regional d'Artà opened in 1927 on the initiative of a group of local scholars who wished to preserve and publicise the municipality's cultural, artistic and historical-archaeological heritage. Its collections come from the museum's own work and from private donations. Among its promoters the pharmacist Llorenç Garcias i Font stands out, who donated a valuable collection of fauna.

It is housed in a building on Carrer de l'Estel, next to the town hall square (plaza del Ayuntamiento), which belonged to Sa Nostra, was restored in the 1960s and was made available to the museum. It is run by a foundation whose board is formed by the Obra Social de Sa Nostra, Artà town council (Ajuntament d'Artà) and the parish. The museum is divided into a natural history section, with an important collection of stuffed birds, and an archaeology section, with prehistoric objects from sites in the region, such as ses Païsses, and from other places on the island.

At the end of 2024 Artà town council bought the building with the help of European funds. The tourist information office remains on the ground floor, and the natural history and archaeology collections continue on the upper floors. The council is studying a social and cultural use for the part of the ground floor that was previously occupied by a bank office.
