About the museum

The Museu de Ciutadella is a municipal museum, run by the town council, that explains the history of the city and its particularities through the stories and objects of its inhabitants. Until 2018 the visitable part was in the bastion of sa Font; since 2019 it has been in Can Saura, a former manor house built between the late 17th and the 18th century, on Carrer del Santíssim. The permanent exhibition opened in its present form in 2022.

The route occupies the ground floor and the first floor across fifteen rooms. Downstairs the municipality, the landscape, the use of natural resources and the city as a place of life and death are presented, and there is a large timeline of the history of Menorca and Ciutadella. On the main floor the route is non-linear: it passes through the events of 1558, the funerary world of the naveta period with the finds from the cova des Càrritx, the island's religions and the finds from the cova des Mussol, and ends with the city's trades, rural life and the Sant Joan festivities.

The collection includes a large ethnological holding and an important archaeological one. The museum divides its functions between several sites: Can Saura receives the public, the bastion of sa Font houses conservation and research, and the El Roser exhibition hall is used for temporary exhibitions. It also offers an educational programme for schools.
