About the museum
The Casa Llorenç Villalonga. Museu Literari occupies Can Sabater, a 17th-century manor house in Binissalem where the writer Llorenç Villalonga, patriarch of the novel in the Catalan language, lived with his wife Teresa Gelabert. In this house he wrote the original manuscript of one of his novels during the years of the Civil War, and works such as “El lledoner de la clastra” were written in his study. The museum opened in 1999 and is part of the Fundació Mallorca Literària, created by the Consell de Mallorca, which also manages the houses of Rafel Ginard and Blai Bonet.
The museography combines the literary biography of the author with the architecture and ethnography of the house. On the ground floor the old bedroom, the kitchen and the living room are recreated. Outside, visitors can see the wine cellar with its vats and the writer's car, a Renault Colorale. Other rooms review Villalonga's career in three stages (the break and the avant-garde, the myth of Bearn, and autobiography), preserve his study with his personal library, and dedicate a space to his literary circle.
The visit can be guided or self-guided with a mobile app available in four languages, and lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. The collection includes some 2,000 volumes from his personal library, letters, articles, photograph albums and manuscripts. The centre also has a documentation centre on contemporary literature.
