About the museum

Can Prunera was built between 1904 and 1911 and is the most important Modernist building in Sóller. After the blight that ruined the valley's orange and lemon trees in 1865, many families emigrated, mainly to France and to the Americas. Emigrants who returned with some wealth competed to build the finest houses, and Can Prunera reflects that taste, with influences from Catalan Modernisme and French Art Nouveau. The architect is not known for certain: one hypothesis attributes the house to Joan Rubió i Bellver, but no document confirms this.

The house retains its original furniture and architectural details: a spiral staircase, stained glass, hydraulic tiles of distinctive design and cabinetwork. After its restoration it opened as a house museum, run by the Fundación Tren de l’Art.

Its rooms display the Colección Serra, assembled by Pere Serra, with works by great masters of the 19th and 20th centuries such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Tsuguharu Foujita, Gustav Klimt and Miquel Barceló. Among them is the bronze “Tête de Femme” by Miró, cast in 1974. The garden contains sculptures by several artists, and the 450 m² Campo de Juego offers an immersive experience of play and creation inspired by Miró's universe.
