About the museum
The Museu de l'Educació de les Illes Balears was set up as an interpretation centre for the historical educational heritage of the archipelago, aimed at the whole of society and especially at the education community. Its precursor is the Museu Pedagògic, a teaching innovation project launched in 1918 by education inspector Joan Capó i Valls de Padrines. In 2001 the Arxiu i Museu de l'Educació de les Illes Balears was created. It took up that initiative and for more than twenty years was based at the Centro de Profesorado (teacher training centre) in Inca.
The Balearic education law of 2022 requires that this heritage be conserved and disseminated through the institution. To this end, the museum has moved into pavilion number 7 of the Quarter General Luque in Inca, a former cavalry barracks restored by the Conselleria d'Educació i Universitats and Inca Town Council, next to the Museu del Calçat (Footwear Museum). The museum depends on the Govern de les Illes Balears (Balearic Government).
The collections bring together materials, objects and testimonies that show how life and teaching in the classroom have developed over time, and that highlight the work of teachers and the role of the school in society. The permanent exhibition presents, through objects, books and stories, schools that form part of the collective memory of the people of the Balearics. The museum also has an archive, a newspaper and periodicals library and a library, and organises temporary exhibitions, workshops, lectures and activities for pupils and the general public.
