About the museum

The museum has its origins in a group of residents who, even before the Civil War, began to gather archaeological finds and historical objects, inspired by the discovery of the Roman villa of Cal Ros de les Cabres in 1899. In 1957 the board of the first Museo Histórico-Arqueológico de la Villa was created, which opened in 1962 on calle Sant Francesc d'Assís. In 1990 it was renamed a nautical museum because the maritime collection was the largest part of the holdings, and in 2001 it moved to the present building.

The holdings are grouped into four collections: historical, archaeological, painting and photographic archive. The permanent exhibition is devoted to the relationship between the town and the sea, and focuses on the 19th century, the period of greatest splendour of El Masnou, linked to shipbuilding, navigation and maritime trade.

The route begins with an introduction to the sea of El Masnou, continues with the origins of the town from prehistory, with Iberian, Roman and medieval materials, and goes on to the shipyards (atarazanas), the fishermen, commercial navigation, Catalan trade with America and the route of tasajo (salted beef), the land trades that served the sea, and the present day of the town. The museum also has a children's corner, the Navegàrium, and a library and documentary archive on nautical subjects.
