About the museum
The museum began its activity before 1979, promoted by the Associació d'Estudis Científics i Culturals de Premià de Mar, and that year it became municipal. Its first home was the farmhouse of Can Manent, and in 1986 it was definitively inaugurated as a museum with a permanent exhibition. The present venue, the Fábrica del Gas (Gas Factory), built in 1884 and refurbished from 2000, was opened on 14 April 2002; warehouses 3 and 4, which once served to purify gas and store coal, now house the museum.
According to the museum itself, it is the only one in the Spanish State specialised in textile printing. It explains printing as both an art and a technique over time, and its role in the industrialisation of Catalonia, from the 18th-century indianas (printed cotton fabrics) to the present day. Its holdings come mainly from bequests of companies such as La España Industrial, Ponsa, Lyon-Barcelona, Vilumara, Vidiestil and Sanpere: original drawings, moulds, tools and machinery, sample books, printed fabrics, archives and a specialist library.
The museum also keeps an exhibition on the archaeology of Premià de Mar. The permanent exhibition was dismantled in 2025 to install a photovoltaic roof between the two buildings, and since 2 June 2025 the museum has remained closed to the public until further notice, although it continues with workshops and occasional activities.
