About the museum

The museum has its origin in Joaquim Cusí, who moved his pharmaceutical company to El Masnou and in 1921 acquired the pharmacy of the Benedictine monastery of Santa María la Real in Nájera, La Rioja. This Baroque pharmacy, built in the second half of the 18th century, has a rectangular plan and a nine-section hemicycle at one end, and it was reinstalled in El Masnou as a museum of pharmacy and medicine.

Since 1997 the museum has been ceded to the Reial Acadèmia de Farmàcia de Catalunya. It is located inside the laboratory complex, next to the N-II road between Montgat and El Masnou.

Besides the pharmacy, the holdings include a library of more than nine thousand volumes, with books from before the 20th century on medicine and pharmacy, mainly pharmacopoeias and recipe books, and an extensive group on ophthalmology. It also houses ceramics, pharmaceutical glass, mortars, ex libris, prints, paintings, medical and pharmaceutical instruments and philately.
