About the museum

The Parque Arqueolóxico da Arte Rupestre of O Campo Lameiro, run by the Xunta de Galicia, is much more than a set of petroglyphs: it is an intervention in a landscape of around 22 hectares that seeks to combine heritage protection with the visitor experience. It was designed by the studio RVR Arquitectos, winner of the competition called by the Xunta. Environmental restoration was a central axis: invasive species such as eucalyptus were removed, deciduous trees were favoured and a network of paths was laid out.

The Centro de Interpretación y Documentación del Arte Rupestre (CIDAR), opened in 2011, serves as the entrance to the park. Its roof of granite slabs imitates a rock emerging from the ground. Its exhibition combines archaeological pieces, reconstructions, models, audiovisuals and interactive experiences to explain how the petroglyphs were carved, what motifs they depict and how the people who made them lived.

A route of more than three kilometres runs through the archaeological area, with wooden platforms that protect the rocks and make them easier to observe; among the most notable engravings are the Laxe dos Carballos and the Outeiro dos Cogoludos. The park also includes a recreated Bronze Age village with huts and storage structures, where two original cists from Vilamerelle and Guidoiro Arenoso can be seen.
