About the museum
The museum is in the Pontevedra municipality of Valga and is devoted to making known the natural heritage and history of the municipality, as well as the life of its most famous native, Agustina Carolina Otero Iglesias, known as La Bella Otero. It combines content on history, art, geography and ethnography.
The main building, of recent construction, houses four exhibition areas spread over its floors. The ground floor focuses on the territory and natural resources of Valga, with elements such as the River Ulla, the Parafita waterfalls and the Mercedes mine. The first floor reviews local history from the first settlers to the present day. An intermediate floor is devoted to the historian Xesús Ferro Couselo and the top floor to La Bella Otero, with documents, international press, ceramic figures and the only surviving recording of her voice.
Outside the main building stands a reproduction of a traditional Galician house from the late 19th century, linked to the artist's childhood, which offers an ethnographic recreation of the life and customs of Galicia. The complex also includes an auditorium for events and talks, a garden and a space for receiving groups and running guided visits and educational activities.
