Centro Etnográfico de Terra de Montes

Ethnographic centre in Soutelo de Montes, Forcarei, with more than 1,200 items on rural life and trades in Terra de Montes up to the sixties.

About the museum

The centre grew out of the passion of the González Peñas family, who from 2000 onwards collected objects of traditional life from Forcarei and the neighbouring villages. The collection was first shown in a traditional house in the town itself and was recognised in 2012 as a visitable collection of Galicia. The family later lent it to the Concello de Forcarei.

In 2021 a new venue opened in the former auditorium of the cultural centre in Soutelo de Montes. The Deputación de Pontevedra funded the fit-out, designed by the architects Luis Gil Pita and Cristina Nieto, and the Concello repaired part of the roof. The space covers about 150 m²: an entrance area designed for groups of around 15 people, with leaflets and bibliography, and an exhibition room with display cases, panels and a projection corner. The design allows pieces to be renewed and temporary exhibitions to be mounted.

The collection comprises more than 1,200 objects, of which about 740 are on display. They illustrate everyday life in Terra de Montes from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century: looms and clothing, childhood, emigration, trades such as carpentry, stonemasonry, clog-making and candle-making, the processing of flax, and tools for farming and livestock.
