About the museum

The Ruínas de San Domingos are the remains of a Gothic Dominican convent in Pontevedra, founded at the end of the 13th century. What survives largely dates from works after 1383: the church apse, with five apses, part of the south wall and the entrance to the chapter house. In 1719 English troops set fire to the convent, and after the disentailment of 1836 the building was closed and had various uses until it fell into ruin.

In the 19th century the council began to demolish it to reuse the stone, but citizen opposition prevented this. In 1894 it passed to the Sociedad Arqueológica de Pontevedra and in 1895 it was declared a National Monument. It was permanently incorporated into the Pontevedra Museum in 1937 and became its second seat.

Today it houses architectural and sculptural remains of the convent complex, a display of funerary sculpture with noble tombs and guild tombstones, and a collection of heraldry. It is the oldest of the buildings that make up the Pontevedra Museum and operates with its own opening hours.
