About the museum
Astrid Lindgrens Näs lies on the spot in Vimmerby where Astrid Lindgren was born in November 1907 and grew up. The farm Näs was a vicarage lease (prästgårdsarrende) worked by her parents Samuel August and Hanna Ericsson, and many people were needed to run it. Here Astrid encountered the stories and settings that later became the foundation of her books.
The Stiftelsen för bevarandet av Astrid Lindgrens gärning (Foundation for the Preservation of Astrid Lindgren’s Work) was founded in 1996 by Vimmerby Municipality and the theme park Astrid Lindgrens Värld, ahead of the author’s ninetieth birthday. The aim was to build a building and create an exhibition on her life and significance. The project was carried out with support from the public, business, the EU’s regional support funds and the Swedish government.
Today the visitor attraction comprises the large exhibition Astrid Lindgren och sagans kraft, temporary exhibitions in the pavilion, the vicarage and the gardens, and a storytelling garden park. The childhood home is a private home owned by Astrid Lindgren’s nieces and can only be visited on guided tours.
