About the museum
Storebro bruksmuseum (Storebro Ironworks Museum) opened to the public in the early 1980s. It lies on the site where Storebro bruk was founded in 1728 with a flour and sawmill. The two-storey mill was demolished in the early 20th century and replaced by a four-storey building, where the museum is today.
In the cellar stand heavy oil engines, producer-gas units, boilers and older lathes. On the ground floor are machine tools that contributed to the works’ success, from one of the first lathes from 1915 to a modern milling machine, and in addition a punching press from 1910, horse-drawn cabs from the 19th century and cast household items from the works.
The first floor is about boatbuilding in Storebro. Shown here are, among other things, a rowing boat from 1946, three motor boats from the 1950s and 1960s, and the cabin cruiser Solö Ruff, of which 2,800 were built between 1951 and 1964. The museum also shows the first Storebro boat, built by the Estonians, which gave Ivar Gustafsson the idea of starting boatbuilding in the Småland forests. In the attic there are cast stoves, cookers, pumps and ploughs, and a collection of tools that gives an insight into working life in the 19th century.
