About the museum
Julles verkstad is a complete village workshop with a mechanical workshop, foundry and carpentry shop, located by a waterfall in the Brusaån river in Mariannelund. The workshop was originally run by water wheel and belt drive, and the belt drive still works. The premises are a listed building and were marked as a cultural heritage site during the King's visit on 16 May 2003.
Johan Nilsson started Mariannelunds Gjuteri och Mekaniska Verkstad (Mariannelund Foundry and Mechanical Workshop) in 1880. He leased the present site in 1900 and built the half-timbered main house. Production at first comprised cast household utensils and later machines for sawmills and the peat industry. The sons Julius and Bror Nilsson took over in 1920, and Julius ran the workshop until 1982, which gave it the nickname Julles verkstad (Julle's workshop). A foundry was added in 1924 and a carpentry workshop in 1944. Foundry work ceased during the 1960s, and the workshop was in operation until 1988.
The local heritage society bought the workshop in 2002, and since then it has been shown as a museum. The machinery is complete, and tools and parts remain on the workbenches as if the workers had just gone for their coffee break. The workshop is open regularly during the summer, and a fire in 2024 in the upper part of the foundry building has been repaired.
