About the museum

The Båtmuseet (boat museum) in Galtabäck harbour, Varberg Municipality, is a branch of Hallands kulturhistoriska museum (Halland Museum of Cultural History). In 1928 two medieval ships were found in the bay between Galtabäck and Gamla Köpstad; the site was one of the few sheltered harbour locations in medieval Halland. The preserved Galtabäck ship is dated to 1195.

The museum displays the preserved keel of the ship together with pictures telling the story of the excavation and the find. Through a large glass window and special lighting, the find can be seen even when the museum is closed. The extension was built in cooperation between the Galtabäcksskeppets bygglag (building association), Hallands kulturhistoriska museum and Varberg Municipality.

The museum also has an exhibition on fishing in Halland, covering hand lines, creels, salmon fishing, drift-net herring fishing, seine fishing and trawl fishing, as well as the strandsittare (shore dwellers), who lived by fishing along the coast.
