About the museum
Marinmuseet i Varberg, previously called Hamnmuseet (Harbour Museum), is located in Trönningenäs about 9 km by road from central Varberg. The museum has been built up by boat and engine enthusiast Bo Oskarsson, who is also the person who receives and shows visitors around.
The focus is on the Swedish American Line (Svenska Amerikalinjen), which sailed the Atlantic between 1915 and 1975. The collection includes, among other things, postcards, china, clothing and menus from the ships, and the museum describes it as the world's largest documentation of the shipping company. An original two-metre-long model of the passenger ship Gripsholm, built in Italy, is also shown.
The museum also has a large collection of outboard motors from 1897 to 1970, a hundred different makes, which includes the first Swedish-built outboard, the Archimedes from 1912. In addition, toys, miniature engines, sewing machines, spirit stoves (spritkök) and other everyday objects from the past are shown.
